A New Way to Earn College Credit in Criminal Justice!

Introducing CourXam: Our Most Innovative Credit-by-Exam Product Yet

What Is It?

A CourXam is a combination of a self-paced, online college course and a college credit exam.   Excelsior College has been providing credit-by-exam opportunities to learners interested in affordable, flexible pathways to degree since its inception as Regents College back in 1971.   What's new with CourXams is that instead of leaving the learner to purchase the textbook and study on their own, we have partnered with Cengage and developed the courseware to help you learn and master what you need to know to pass the college credit examination and earn three credits towards your degree.  For a look at the many great companies involved in the production of CourXams, click here.

Each CourXam was developed based on a market-leading Cengage textbook used in teaching the subject area by hundreds of US colleges.  These textbooks were then developed into rich digital instructional materials by instructional design experts from Cengage Learning, to meet the learning objectives identified by faculty from Excelsior College as well as other regionally accredited institutions.   The proof of  progress towards, and ultimate achievement of those learning objectives is measured  by assessments expertly designed by the Center for Educational Measurement at Excelsior College in concert with dozens of subject matter experts from colleges around the country.

All the learning materials, the practice assessments, and the registration for the college credit exam, are packaged together in one incredible new product.

Why Choose a CourXam Over a Course or Exam?

How Are Credits Earned and Used?

Each CourXam is designed to help you master the learning objectives and competencies of a three-credit regular college course, on your own.  Your mastery of these objectives and competencies is measured by the live proctored, credit-bearing examination.   A passing score on this examination is worth three credits towards your degree at Excelsior, and may be transferrable to your school of choice (check with your school prior to registering for the CourXam).   A passing score is a C or better for the undergraduate CourXams, and a B or better on the graduate-level CourXams. You will receive your score immediately upon completing the examination - no waiting for six weeks or more to find out your results!  Your score report for each CourXam will be available to you as a PDF in your dashboard, and will include information on how and when to submit your score(s) to Excelsior College.

Right now, you cannot complete an entire degree program by CourXam.  If you pass all five introductory level CourXams in Criminal Justice, you will have saved thousands of dollars and satisfied the  core (major)  degree requirement for an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at the School of Public Service at Excelsior College.  You will still need to take or transfer in the remaining  credit requirements (we offer these in online course or standalone exam offerings) and complete the Information Literacy and capstone reqirements, to obtain a degree.   You do not need to take all five of the core Criminal Justice credits as CourXams; each CourXam is completely interchangeable with the online course of the same name.   And you can use credits earned from CourXams towards the Social Science or Applied Professional requirements of other degree programs at Excelsior College - your academic advisor can help determine if a CourXam is a good option for you.
